Sentinels of Freedom Arizona (SOFAZ) is a community non-profit organization that provides transitional services for wounded service members returning home from war. “The three greatest needs of our returning services members especially wounded veterans are; mentors in the community, employment opportunities and transitional housing”, stated Howard Lien, President of the Sentinel of Freedom Arizona.

Sentinels of Freedom Arizona has joined with SALT a non-profit housing provider to help meet the housing needs of Arizona wounded veterans. SALT gifted a condominium in Scottsdale to Sentinels of Freedom Arizona for use in its transitional housing program. “Our Sentinel’s community network came together and totally renovated then furnished the unit, it came out beautiful.” Offer Robert Vera, Mentor Program Leader at SOFAZ.

Wounded in Iraq, retired Army Staff Sergeant Eric Cowin will move into the newly refurbished home while he prepares to return to school as a full time college student in Arizona. “The condo is in a perfect location and a great community, I am so grateful to have the mentoring, transitional housing and so much other support from Sentinels of Freedom Arizona, it has been life changing” stated Mr. Cowin. While on patrol in Iraq Staff Sergeants Cowin’s patrol came under attack, Eric’s wounds were so severe that his left leg had to be amputated.

On May 20, 2012 Sentinels of Freedom Arizona and Retired Staff Sergeant Cowin will officially recognize and thank all who made this transitional housing possible.

Yesterday we were able to complete the transfer of ownership of a 2 bedroom, Scottsdale condo to Sentinels of Freedom, AZ.

We will be working with the Home Depot for a donation of the needed materials such as cabinets, fixtures, carpet and paint. Also, we are looking at general contractors who will be orchestrating the demo and installation of the needed work. If implemented properly, the home should be on-line and available for occupancy in approximately 45 days.
This is a huge step in the right direction for Sentinels of Freedom, AZ! We will be exploring additional avenues for similar donations and or purchases. Given the fact that we spend approximately $40,000 to $60,000 per scholarship recipient, owning the homes makes a lot of sense in this housing market which will allow us to do more with the donations and bring in more Sentinels.

RE/MAX Excalibur Realty has adopted the Sentinels of Freedom program as one of its endorsed charities. Excalibur associates are encouraged to contribute a portion of their commissions from each closing to the Sentinels of Freedom. When they do so, the homes that they have listed for sale, have “riders” attached to the yard signs. The riders announce the home as a FREEDOM HOME, indicating that the agent is actively supporting Sentinels of Freedom. There is also a web address on the sign telling the viewer where they can see more information on Sentinels of Freedom and the assistance that we are providing to the wounded soldiers.

Please use our web form to contact us further regarding participation in the FREEDOM HOME program.
